Something To Goo

It’s that time of year when school is still in session but our heads our outside in the sunshine. Today Anthony & I decided to have a little fun with science. We made some homemade gak (or goo). It looks like slime but feels more like putty, so basically if silly putty married slime this would be their baby.

Materials:
Elmer’s Glue® (8 oz bottle or two 4 oz)
Food coloring (we used neon)
Water (½ cup – warm)
1 tsp. Borax (a powdered soap found in the laundry isle at the grocery store)
Mixing bowl
Spoon
Measuring cup
Ziplock® Bag

Gak

  1. Empty the entire bottle(s) of glue into a mixing bowl. Fill the empty bottle(s) with warm water and shake. Pour the glue-water mixture into the mixing bowl and use the spoon to mix well.
  2. Add food coloring (we used several drops to get the right color).
  3. Measure 1/2 cup of warm water and add a teaspoon of Borax powder to the water. Stir the solution until all of the powder dissolves.
  4. While stirring the glue in the mixing bowl, slowly add a little of the Borax solution. Immediately you’ll feel the long strands starting to connect. It’s time to use your hands. Once it feels perfect to you stop adding the mixture. You might like your slime more stringy while others like it firm.

Gak - Fun

When you’re finished playing with your gak, seal it up in a ziplock bag for safe keeping. We played with this for hours! Make this with your kids or grand-kids and have a blast!
