Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day

Of all the jobs I have ever had, parenting was one of the most challenging. It was also the most rewarding! I didn’t know about the sleepless nights or the endless worry I would experience. When I look back at my experience I would admit to many things I would do differently if only I had the chance. In the end all of it was worth it!

Now I can look at the men my sons have become and it makes me proud. Im thankful that they each take every opportunity to tell their father and I how much they appreciate us and admire us. They don’t wait for a specific day to let us know how much they love us. That is the greatest gift of all.

Its odd that I find myself thinking of my Dad on this day. He single handedly fathered and mothered me for many years. He never made me feel stupid for asking awkward questions and he always answered them respectfully and honestly. When he knew I needed a female role model he was able to ask for that help even if it meant me leaving his nest too soon.

I also want to thank the women in my life:

My grandmother was one of the greatest women I have ever known! She encouraged education, respect, religion and compassion. Im so blessed to have had her as a mother figure in my life. I know when she is looking down from heaven she is proud of our family!

My sister Joan was my guardian during my teenage years. She took on a responsibility I couldn’t even have pretended to understand until I was raising my own teenagers. The experience forced us to put sisterhood on hold for a brief time but we figured it all out years later. She encouraged me to be accountable, respectful and thankful. She taught me to appreciate family in a way no one else could have.

I also want to thank Mary Linkous. She played a part in my life that helped shape many of my decisions. As the mother of my best friend she was often there when key moments were happening in my life. Her nod of approval meant the world to me and always will. She helped wipe away many childhood tears and even hosted our wedding reception in their home.

Today I wish all the mothers out there a happy and wonderful day!

  3. What a great post. Thank you so much for sharing. I, too, was raised by a single father, and he was the best parent anyone could ever have hoped for for two young girls. Thank you.
